Prose: This Quill in My Hand

17 Apr

This quill in my hand has taught me a valuable lesson.

You see before today I considered it a show piece, a bragging right and simply a way to describe myself to others.

“Aren’t you impressed that I’m a writer.”

So far from the truth.

So sad that it took this much time and correction for me to learn who and whose I really was.

You see this quill in my hand was never for me.

Never to be used for my glory.

God forbid “Lord, it will never happen again.”

“Please, Dear Lord, please return my pen…”

My niece celebrating her 15th birthday

My beautiful niece shares a gift just like me.
It was quite a surprise to learn that we both write poetry.
Rhymes with reason.
A means of expression for what otherwise cannot be spoken.
It is then that our release comes.
Peace that we long for when no one else understands.
It’s not easy being “different” or knowing that you’re not quite the same.
But what difference does it make when no one knows my name.
I came into this world a bright light, a blessed child, wanted and my mother’s delight.
Now as I come into my own and must find my way, I’ve come to realize that my pen leads the way.
Write, baby, write!
And allow your voice to be heard.
Knowing that there are no limits and that there is no depth that I cannot reach.
Prayers have been released as you continue to move.
Asking the Lord to guide you and keep you into womanhood.
